When Rob Elliot gave his post-match thoughts on his sides 5-1 defeat to Huddersfield at the weekend, he pulled no punches labelling the performance - and his players - "horrendous", "not good enough" and "unable to deal with the game". The club, unsurprisingly, acted swiftly to relieve Elliot of his duties meaning Crawley Town are in the market for a new manager.

Crawley to Turn to Promotion Specialist?

Anyone but eternal optimists who support Crawley Town are likely to agree that their time as a League One club is over, for now. They are 12 points from safety with nine games to play and have just been hammered 5-1 in a match where they were 4-0 down after just 20 minutes. The bookmakers also agree, pricing Crawley's relegation from League One at 1/100.

That defeat, the longer term poor form and a rather brutal post-match interview from Rob Elliot saw him axed as manager. The betting market would suggest that Crawley will turn to a manager who is equipped to bring them back to the third tier next season but who will it be?

Here we look at some of the most interesting new managerial candidates.

Next Crawley Manager Candidates – What Do the Odds Say?

Make no mistake about it, Crawley's season is over. Their managerial appointment is all about finding the gaffer that can bring them back up at the first time of asking. Here are some of the most fancied candidates.

Scott Lindsey 4/6

Former Crawley boss, Scott Lindsey being the early favourite for the vacant manger job blows our mind but his price does keep shortening, if you want to read into that. We guess it could happen but odds of 4/6 are not remotely a value pick.

Lindsey previously did a fantastic job with the club, guiding them to promotion to League One whilst recording the best win percentage of his managerial career but he showed little loyalty when jumping ship, notably back to a League Two club in MK Dons, shortly after promotion.

To make matters worse, he's then overseen a pretty horrid campaign with MK Dons to the point where they sacked him earlier this month! That said, there are positive noises from some fans on social media...

Ian Evatt 6/1

Ian Evatt has done a good job in both of the managerial positions he's held to date with the 43-year-old first guiding Barrow from the National League into League Two and then taking Bolton from League Two into League One; coincidentally, that promotion was sealed courtesy of a final day win against Crawley.

Following promotion, Evatt oversaw steady progress with Bolton steering them, first, to a top half finish and then the EFL Trophy and two play-off campaigns where they were defeated in the semi-finals and final respectively.

This season saw Evatt have the first backwards step of his career with Bolton heading for a mid-table finish and he was duly removed from his post. Evatt would clearly be a good appointment but the former Blackpool man might fancy his chances of another League One job given his body of work.

Jon Brady - 8/1

Odds of 8/1 suggest that Crawley moving for Jon Brady is not likely but also far from impossible. It would be a real statement of intent if the club could line up such an appointment; admittedly, perhaps not to Evatt levels but Brady is perhaps more probable to say "yes" to the idea.

Crawley will, barring a utter miracle, be in League Two next season and Brady has a track record of consistently competing at the top end of that division having come up automatically with Northampton after falling agonisingly short of the same achievement the prior year.

More impressive was the fact he then guided them to a mid-table finish in the third tier before resigning with the club in danger of the drop in December. Brady may well fancy another crack elsewhere and a League One job probably isn't that likely for him. The Crawley Town vacancy may well appeal.

Ryan Mason - 14/1

We'll quickly pour cold water on this link. Even at 14/1, this isn't worth a dabble in our view.

Tottenham assistant Ryan Mason is a rogue name in the betting for next Crawley manager. Mason has made no secret of his desire to take a Head Coach role in the near future and, evidently, that opportunity won't come at Tottenham no matter the future of Ange Postecoglou but with the 33-year-old having been interviewed for jobs of the ilk of Anderlecht as recently as October last year, you'd think he has his sights set a little higher than, at best, the bottom end of League One
