Eurovision 2024 Preview: Semifinal Showdowns and Winner Predictions

The Eurovision Song Contest is a European cultural phenomenon and a highlight for entertainment bettors worldwide. Eurovision 2024 is taking place this week, with two semifinals and the summit event itself, Saturday’s Grand Final.

Here's a closer look at the contenders and expert insights for this year's competition.

First Semi-Final

In the first semifinal, 15 countries compete for 10 available spots in the Grand Final. Croatia is aiming for the top spot with Baby Lasagna and his song "Rim Tim Tagi Dim’’ and is predicted to not only make it through to the First Semi-Final but also win the entire competition. 

Ukraine and Lithuania are also top contenders expected to qualify. Ukraine is making a strong impression with emotional vocals from alyona alyona and Jerry Heil, who will perform their song "Teresa & Maria." Meanwhile, Lithuania is captivating audiences with Silvester Belt's modern and catchy style in his song "Luktelk."

Ireland and Finland are also expected to secure their places without much difficulty, perhaps benefiting from memorable songs and effective stage presentations. Luxembourg, Portugal, Cyprus, Poland, and Serbia complete the list of favourites, all with strong chances of advancing. 

On the other hand, Australia, Slovenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, and Iceland face tougher odds and are not expected to qualify as easily.

Second Semi-Final 

In the second semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest, another set of 15 countries battles for the remaining 10 spots in the Grand Final. 

The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Greece are the front-runners and are predicted to qualify based on their strong historical performances and popular entries this year. 

The Netherlands is represented by Joost Klein, who brings a catchy 90s vibe with his song "Europapa." Greece features Marina Satti with "ZARI," which infuses traditional greek elements with a strong, distinctive attitude. Switzerland’s entry, "The Code" by Nemo, is considered genius and unconventional, breaking the traditional moulds of music with its unique style.

Armenia, Israel, and Norway also have high expectations this year. Armenia is represented by LADANIVA with their song "Jako," which features traditional elements and great vocals. Israel's Eden Golan performs "Hurricane," a beautiful and emotional piece that has generated much discussion. Norway brings a distinctive flair with Gåte's "Ulveham," known for its great vocals and heavy Norwegian style.

Georgia, Austria, and Belgium are seen as less likely to advance, although they still have a fighting chance. These countries might be hindered this year by less memorable performances or stiffer competition.

Bookmakers view the bottom five, consisting of Denmark, Albania, San Marino, Latvia, Czechia, and Malta, as the least likely to advance. Their lower prospects range from less compelling songs and weaker performances to being outshone by stronger contenders in a tough semifinal lineup. Moreover, smaller nations often lack significant neighbourly support, which can play a critical role in garnering the votes needed to move forward in the competition.

Grand Final

This week, the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 brings us to the edge of our seats with its mix of music and drama. As we mentioned, Croatia is currently the top favourite, but since we haven't seen all the live shows, anything can happen. 

Switzerland and Italy are also among the favourites this year; however, as in previous years, the performance itself can greatly influence how both the public and the jury vote.
