Championship Relegation Odds: Plymouth and Birmingham in Last-day Relegation Fight

The last day of the season will see five nervous teams fighting to avoid the drop to League One.

But the Championship relegation betting odds are pitching the survival scrap to be a straight battle between Plymouth Argyle and Birmingham City ahead of the dramatic finale on Saturday.

Huddersfield Town are not yet mathematically down, but their draw with Birmingham has left them with a massive mountain to climb when they travel to promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town.

The scale of the task facing the Terriers is evidenced by their new Championship relegation odds of 1/100. Huddersfield needs to beat Ipswich and hope Plymouth lose to play-off chasing Hull City by enough goals to overturn a -15 margin in their respective goal difference tallies.

Plymouth seemed to have done enough when they shocked league leaders Leicester City a couple of weeks back. But Argyle go into the last day at 11/4 in the Championship relegation odds after a defeat to Millwall at the weekend dragged them right back into the relegation battle.

Drawing with Huddersfield did little to ease relegation fears at Birmingham City. The Blues are a point behind Argyle in the table and they also have a worse goal difference to boot. Birmingham are at home to Norwich City on the last day and will hope that the Canaries take their eye off the ball, as their place in the play-offs is almost mathematically certain going into Saturday's games.

Championship relegation odds of 1/2 indicate Birmingham may well struggle to get out of it. An American takeover appears to have backfired, with a season of struggle featuring a series of lows including an ill-fated spell with the former England striker Wayne Rooney as manager. Birmingham are unbeaten in three but they will need to beat Norwich to give themselves a shot.

Sheffield Wednesday were seen as near-certainties for the drop just a few short months ago, but Danny Rohl has done a remarkable job to turn things around for the Owls. Wednesday, who are now sitting happily at around 16/1 in the Championship relegation betting odds, have built up a three-point cushion to the drop zone going into their last-day match away to Sunderland.

Wednesday's big 3-0 win at home to West Brom at the weekend means that they are one of the league's in-form sides. Rohl's men took 11 points from the past 15 available to move well clear.

It has been a nervy end to the season for Blackburn Rovers, who are now 16/1 to be relegated on the last day. The Lancashire side will be away to Leicester City, who could be the champions by then, but they can at least toast a superb season from their star man Sammie Szmodics. 

The Republic of Ireland hotshot has hit 25 goals in the Championship this term to sit five clear of his nearest rival for the top goalscorer prize, the Southampton striker Adam Armstrong.
