A midweek Championship matchday is certainly nothing to complain about and this one had its share of drama. With this league, though, should we expect any different?
It has been a strange few weeks at the top of the Championship, but the title fight is remaining just that - a fight. There's too much entertainment to discuss, so let's dive straight in.
Leeds United are quite good at football and have proved as much once again. At the weekend, they overcame a play-off pushing Coventry City side by two goals to nil, a challenge for any team.
Against Watford, the story was the same. Once again away from Elland Road, the Whites strolled past another play-off contender at their home ground, this time by four goals to nil. If there were any doubts about the Peacocks, they are quickly fading.
Sheffield United are refusing to give their Yorkshire rivals much breathing room though, and they also claimed three huge points in midweek. Middlesbrough travelled down to Bramall Lane and despite a decent first-half showing, the Blades came out on top.
Late goals from Ben Brereton Diaz and Anel Ahmedhodzic put the game to bed, and the South Yorkshire outfit are in a great position.
On their heels is Burnley, who again won in midweek - yes, there is a pattern forming here - this time against a team at the polar end of the league. Hull City were tasked by their Yorkshire allies to try and halt the Lancashire outfit, but they could not do so.
There is a five-point gap between the Whites and Burnley, so hopes of a title charge may be slimming. Nevertheless, Scott Parker's side remain in the mix.
Finally, Sunderland also won this week after a slightly inconsistent past few games which has seen them drop in the table a little. A 2-0 win against Luton Town has kept them within seven points of the league leaders.
Below, we have collected the top contenders and their respective odds to win the championship title in the 2024/25 season.
Six teams are hoping for a place in the promotion places at the end of the season and given we have covered four teams already, it is pointless to then cover the same teams in this area, so we're going to look at fourth and below.
As we said in the last odds watch, the Championship is a leapfrog division, and the play-offs are displaying this much perfectly. We again saw another shake-up in midweek, and things are almost impossible to call.
Blackburn returned to fifth place with their win against West Bromwich Albion, which is a huge result in the wider scheme of things. There have been several reports about John Eustace's future, so the win may settle things around the club slightly. As a result of the loss, the Baggies now sit sixth, but there is a slight bumper to seventh.
Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday both follow on 45 points and wins against Stoke City and Swansea City have moved the duo into the play-off picture more solidly.
Middlesbrough are on the drift in the odds and the league with their recent form, and we must admit it is quite a worry for Michael Carrick's side...
Coventry overcame their defeat at the weekend and sit in 10th, but with only three points between themselves and sixth-placed West Brom, they are definitely in with a chance of reaching the playoffs.
Below, we have collected the top contenders and their respective odds to win promotion in the 2024/25 Championship season, as well as an outsider pick for a top-six finish.
We have seen a few shocks in the league recently, and the bottom of the division is proving no different.
After their win at the weekend, Plymouth have followed it up with another three points, this time with a 5-1 dismantling of Millwall. Considering the Lions have hovered around the play-off region, seeing this scoreline is certainly something of a shock.
As a result, the Pilgrims are now in 23rd, sitting above Luton Town, maybe they are not as doomed as they may have once seemed.
Speaking of Luton, the Hatters once again fell to defeat in midweek, and this is becoming a really worrying position for them if it wasn't already. Not only have they not managed a new manager bounce - but they also just look derived of much chance.
Hull's loss to Burnley has them sitting in the relegation zone once again, but things are not too bleak I must admit.
Between 18th place Portsmouth and 24th Luton Town, there are only six points, so things may shift around a lot in the next few weeks. Would it be the Championship if it was not like this?
Below, we have collected the top contenders and their respective odds to be relegated in the 2024/25 Championship season.
