After three years of being in and around the play-offs, Middlesbrough took the tough decision to sack Michael Carrick this week, due to his failure to return the team to the Premier League.
Within hours, the odds for his replacement were made available, with rumours flying already.
Below are the latest betting odds for Middlesbrough's next permanent manager at the time of this post.
Since returning to the Championship, Middlesbrough have flirted with the play-off places every year, probably more so in recent years. So, with Michael Carrick unable to get the team back into the top flight, despite coming close on three occasions, it is time to move on.
Throughout the 2024/25 campaign, there were regular questions about his future from supporters, and the club have now taken action, announcing his departure on Wednesday afternoon.
So, the focus now turns to the future, and there are some intriguing names already being linked with the job.
The market for the next Middlesbrough boss is quite nice currently, with a number of candidates available at interesting prices.
Edwards' name here is not a shock, but being named the favourite is certainly intriguing, considering he is also the heavy favourite to take the Bristol City job. Nevertheless, it is easy to understand why this is the case.
Before this season, the Englishman's stock was sky high, and his promotion to the Premier League with Luton Town showed his skills at getting results with foundations already laid out.
With that said, I'd be slightly shocked if the club do not aim a little higher, in the least insulting way to the former Luton coach.

When the odds were published, Cooper quickly became the favourite, being priced around the 1/1 mark. Whilst Edwards' name has now taken that spot, Cooper is still strong in the market, and is seemingly settling around this price of 2/1.
As appointments go, this is one of the best that Boro could make, I feel. He has a fantastic record in the Championship, including promotion with Nottingham Forest and a play-off campaign with Swansea.
You'd imagine the Teesside club could afford his requests, and there should be a bit of a transfer kitty available to him. It certainly is not an inconceivable idea.

Priske's inclusion here is not a shock, with him being linked to other jobs in England recently, most notably that of Notts County. However, a move to the North East is certainly more feasible than one to League Two.
The Dane has considerable experience in Europe and is well-renowned as a coach, so a move to the UK could be well on his list of things to do. Middlesbrough, then, would be a good platform, considering the squad is already rather impressive.
At 3/1, I don't hate this idea, but I'd certainly like the price to be a little nicer. However, with the market as it is, it probably will not settle just yet.

At the time of writing, the odds are really volatile, so I'd be holding off on a bet just yet. However, there are some prices of intrigue present.
In the shorter range, Danny Rohl and Tom Cleverley are both intriguing, with both highly rated. A move for the latter would certainly be easier, due to Rohl's situation with Sheffield Wednesday.
Gary O'Neil and Dave Challinor at 20/1 could potentially be a little high with cases available to be made for both, the latter especially, given he already has experience in the North East and could be ready for the next step of his career.
25/1 Marti Cifuentes and 33/1 Ralph Hasenhuttl could also be notable shouts, with both highly rated. However, their prices are certainly very risky at present.
