Over/Under 0.5 Goals Explained

Over/under 0.5 goals is a betting market in which punters bet on the total number of goals (both teams) scored in a match. The bet covers 90 minutes plus additional time, but not extra time. Over 0.5 goals is a bet on there to be 1 or more goals in a game, while under 0.5 goals is a bet on no goals in a match.

You will find that all of the over/under markets have a .5 decimal, which eliminates the possibility of there being a stalemate or a draw. You can thus only win or lose with these markets, there is nothing in between. Nevertheless, these markets remain very popular among punters on the most prominent betting sites in the UK.

Before you place an over/under bet, such as there being over 2.5 goals in a game, we recommend checking out our betting margins guide to find the bookmakers with the best odds.

Over 0.5 Goals in Practice

Over 0.5 goals is a bet on a game having 1 or more goals scored in 90 minutes plus additional time. Goals scored by either team count towards this betting market, and this bet will only lose if the game finishes goalless (0-0). As most games have at least one goal, the betting odds will always be quite short on over 0.5 bets.

As an example, you might want to place a bet on a Europa League knockout stage clash. Let's say that West Ham are taking on Roma in the quarters, and you are confident that at least one of the teams will score. You thus stake a rather large amount on there to be over 0.5 goals in the game. Unfortunately, however, the game ends 0-0 and the bet loses.

Had one of the teams found the back of the net, the bet would have been a winner. Over 0.5 goals bets are often successful but punters need to be careful as the odd 0-0 draws do occur.

Under 0.5 Goals in Practice

Under 0.5 goals is a bet on a game having zero goals scored in 90 minutes plus additional time. Goals scored by either team count towards this betting market, and even just one side finding the back of the net will thus cause this bet to lose. This market can actually offer some decent odds as football games rarely end 0-0 these days, so it could be worth a wager.

As an example, let's say that you have spotted an opportunity in a Premier League game between Manchester City and Liverpool. Both have scored a lot of goals during the season but you have a feeling that they could cancel each other out. Therefore, you place an under 0.5 goals bet, and your educated guess turns out to be right as the game finished 0-0.

Some luck could perhaps be needed for a bet like this, as teams tend to come close to scoring even if the final result is 0-0. Manchester City might hit the best, for instance, to use the example above.
