What No Contest Means in the UFC- Short Answer

In UFC betting, no contest means that the fight finished for a reason outside of either fighters' hands, therefore, without there being a winner or loser in the bout.

How No Contest Results Affect UFC Betting

When browsing UFC betting markets, fight fans will see that there are just two options on the outright market, one for each fighter to win.

Round betting on the UFC might also be offered, and it is also common to bet on the method of victory: submission, technical knockout, knockout, forfeit, judges’ decision, or disqualification.

No contest can happen for a range of reasons. There might be an accidental illegal strike that results in a fighter not being able to continue. An injury due to an accidental foul is also a reason for a no-contest outcome in the UFC. No contest can also be declared sometime after a bout in the event of the victor testing for a banned substance or even in cases of match-fixing.

So what happens to the UFC betting in the event of a fight being declared a no-contest? Well, on most UFC betting sites, all outright bets that were placed on the bet will be declared void.

What this means is that fight fans who have backed one of the fighters to win the bout will see their stakes returned back into their account balance, ready to be used on different wagers.

One thing to keep in mind is that free bets might not be refunded if they were used on a UFC bout that ended up being declared no contest. It is worth having a look at the terms and conditions of a UFC betting site to see exactly what happens to wagers if it is no contest.

UFC Betting - A Example of a No-contest Outcome

One of the most famous examples of a no-contest outcome in MMA came back in 2007. The bout was between Rob Emerson and Gray Maynard, taking place in The Ultimate Fighter 5 season finale.

Maynard was attempting a takedown of Emerson but somehow knocked himself temporarily unconscious in the process. At the same time, Emerson submitted because of an aggravated injury to his ribs. Both Emerson and Maynard were not aware that their opponent would not be able to continue the bout, with a no-contest outcome having been declared as the result.

Another famous no-contest outcome happened between Tyler Bryan and Shaun Parker in May 2008. Taking place at the Legends of Fighting Championship 25: Breaking Point event, Parker and Bryan remarkably managed to knock each other out simultaneously. The fight's referee, Shonie Carter, decided to label the result as a no-contest outcome, rather than as a draw.

In the event of a title bout being declared a no-contest outcome, the holder of the belt retains it. However, the fight will not be counted as a title defence when it comes to their career results.
