What is a Canadian Bet?

A Canadian bet sounds like a bizarre name for a wager, but it is one of the most common types of accumulators that are commonly used for sports like football and horse racing.

Our full guide to a Canadian bet has all the details about this wager, so read on for more details.

How a Canadian Bet Works

Sometimes referred to as a Super Yankee, a Canadian bet is a type of wager made up of five selections. So it might be five horses or five teams to win if a football fan is placing the bet.

There are 26 individual parts to the bet, which means that the stake is placed 26 times. If a user decided to place 10p on a Canadian bet, it would therefore result in a total stake of £2.60.

The types of wager that are included in a Canadian bet on UK betting sites are as follows:

  • 10 double bets
  • 10 treble bets
  • 5 four-fold accumulator
  • 1 five-fold accumulator

As is clear from this, users need at least two legs to win to get any return from the bet. It goes without saying that the best return from this type of bet would be if all five legs of the wager were successful, as this would mean every part of the Canadian bet would actually payout.

One of the benefits of a Canadian bet is that if there is an upset and just one leg loses, it means customers can still expect to receive a decent return due to the number of lines in the bet.

How to Place a Canadian Bet

Newcomers who are worried about how to place a Canadian bet do not have to worry as the process is very straightforward. Users just pick the five selections they want to make and add them to their betslip in exactly the same way as they would if they were placing an accumulator.

Then, users should look for the Canadian option – it might be called Super Yankee – and enter their stake, keeping in mind that it will be multiplied by 26 to cover all of the different lines. When betting on horse racing, each-way Canadian bets are also possible but this doubles the stake.

As with other types of bet, when placing a Canadian bet, users will be able to see the potential profit that they are in line to win. The total number will be if all five legs of the bet are winners.

Let’s say that a football fan is looking to place a Canadian bet and has made five picks.

The 10 doubles that make up a part of the Canadian bet would look like the following:

  • Manchester United to beat Everton and Newcastle United to beat Burnley
  • Manchester United to beat Everton and Liverpool to beat Brentford
  • Manchester United to beat Everton and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Manchester United to beat Everton and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Liverpool to beat Brentford
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Liverpool to beat Brentford and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Liverpool to beat Brentford and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea

There would then also be 10 trebles that are placed as part of the Canadian bet as well:

  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Liverpool to beat Brentford
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Liverpool to beat Brentford, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea

Moving on, the Canadian bet would cover five different four-fold accumulators, as follows:

  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Liverpool to beat Brentford, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea
  • Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea

Lastly, wrapping up the 26 lines of a Canadian bet would be a five-fold accumulator:

  • Manchester United to beat Everton, Newcastle United to beat Burnley, Liverpool to beat Brentford, Aston Villa to beat Crystal Palace and Arsenal to beat Chelsea

As you can see, two wins from five means a double will be paid out, no matter which of the five selections it is that are successful.

Three wins from five would be a larger payout still, while the potential profit would increase even more in the event of there being four wins out of five.

The perfect result for a Canadian bet for the football fan in question would be for all five legs of the wager to win, of course, as this pays out the most potential profit at UK betting sites.

It is important to keep in mind that with 26 lines in play in a Canadian bet, the stake can be large. If a football fan wanted to put £1 on each line, it would result in a total stake of £26.

In our example, we used home wins to make it straightforward but any combination of selections can be placed as part of a Canadian wager, for example, two home wins, two aways and a draw.

What is a Canadian bet?

A Canadian bet is a type of multiple wager made up of 26 lines in total and on some UK betting sites it might be known as a Super Yankee instead. In a Canadian bet, there are 10 doubles, 10 trebles, five four-fold accumulators and a five-fold accumulator to finish off the 26 lines in total.

How does a Canadian bet work?

A Canadian bet works in a similar way to other types of multiple wagers such as a Yankee or a trixie, with the aim to cover a lot of potential outcomes while still coming up with a return. One of the main reasons that people choose a Canadian bet is that they only need at least two of their five selections to be a winner to be guaranteed to receive some sort of return on their wager.

How to calculate a Canadian bet?

With so many different lines in play, it is not very easy for people to learn how to calculate a Canadian bet themselves, but the good news is UK betting sites will automatically tell a user the full potential winnings from the bet as they are placing it. Various websites are also home to calculators for a Canadian bet which some might find useful when they are making their picks.
