Understanding the Europa League Format

In this section, we will start from the group stage up to the final. A total of 32 teams enter the group stage, consisting of domestic league winners, qualifying rounds winners and losers from the Champions League qualifying rounds.

The group winners automatically progress to the knockout phase, while the runners-up have to face teams arriving from the Champions League in a two-legged play-off tie. The winners of these clashes then join the group winners for the proper knockout stage, starting with the Round of 16.

In the knockout stage, teams play each other twice - once at home and once away - and the away goal rule is no longer in place since a few years back. The final, however, is just one leg and is also played at a neutral venue (which is different every year).
