Leeds and Leicester Close on Championship Promotion as Play-off Race Continues

The Championship promotion race has seen Leeds United and Leicester City take steps towards returning to the Premier League, capitalising on Ipswich Town having the weekend off.

Leeds edged a seven-goal thriller away to Middlesbrough on Monday night, with a double from Crysencio Summerville ending a worrying three-game winless run for Daniel Farke's side.

That victory ended Middlesbrough's slim play-off hopes and moved Leeds into second spot in the table, a point ahead of Ipswich. Leeds are now sitting pretty at 8/11 in the Championship top-two betting odds, with the Whites next in action away to Queens Park Rangers.

Ipswich have a game in hand over Leeds but could be four points behind their promotion rivals by the time they travel to Hull City at the weekend. The Tractor Boys have failed to win any of their past three games, resulting in their automatic promotion odds slipping to 11/10.

Leicester beat West Brom 2-1 at the weekend to stay clear at the top and bounce back from successive 1-0 defeats on the road at Millwall and Plymouth that dented their promotion push.

The Foxes then hosted Southampton in a crunch clash on Wednesday night, with the Saints needing to win to recover from a damaging defeat away to Cardiff City at the weekend.

Enzo Maresca's men ran out 5-0 winners against Southampton, largely thanks to a hat-trick by Abdul Fatawu, with Wilfried Ndidi and Jamie Vardy also on target in the rout.

Leicester only need to win one of their last two games to confirm promotion back to the Premier League and are 1/100 in the Championship top-two betting odds thanks to their twin wins. They are also out to 1/11 to win the Championship!

Southampton are not quite out of the race for the automatic promotion places but two defeats on the road in a row has left them with a mountain to climb at 500/1 to be in the top two.

Despite West Brom losing at Leicester, the Baggies remain near-certainties to book a place in the play-offs at the end of the season. West Brom have managed a single win from their past six league games - and that was at relegated Rotherham United - so they have lost momentum.

West Brom are 1/40 in the Championship top-six betting odds as their 72 points on the board might well be enough to hold on even if they take nothing from their last two remaining games.

Norwich are 1/25 to book a play-off spot after a 1-1 draw with Bristol City at the weekend. The Canaries are unbeaten in four and can secure their place against Swansea City next time out.

Hull's 0-0 draw at Watford cost them the chance to move closer to Norwich and West Brom, with the Tigers taking on FA Cup heroes Coventry City on Wednesday night. Whoever wins that one will see their Championship top-six betting odds shorten, with Hull at 19/1 and Coventry at 14/1.
