Yes, I have gone for Spurs to get a result at the Camp Nou. No, I am not crazy, I just do not think Barcelona will risk key players for a match that means nothing but pride to them. They are already solidified in first place and will be looking to their next league fixture as the La Liga title race is heating up.
Ernesto Valverde has already announced he will be resting Suarez and I expect other key players to sit out of this one. Also, Barcelona are struggling themselves with just two clean sheets at home this season while conceding 12 goals in eight matches.
There is a lot of reliance on Messi this season, and I could see him being rested for this game as it is arguably not worth the risk to a game that really doesn’t matter to them.
At 4/5 for the double chance, I see Spurs getting at least a draw against a weaker Barcelona team that have their focus on the next league match this weekend. But, if Barcelona starts a strong team, including Messi, I do not recommend this pick.
No Messi put the bet on, but if Messi starts, avoid the bet, and opt for the Barcelona win at 21/20… I mean, Messi has been involved in 28 goals (22 goals six assists) in 29 Champions League appearances against English clubs, there is no way I am backing against him at the Camp Nou.
Monaco are sitting last in the group with four losses and one draw, and they have absolutely nothing to play for in this game. But, they are in a bit of a relegation battle in the league, and that will undoubtedly be their main focus. They are currently 19th in Ligue 1 with just 3 wins, 4 draws and 9 losses this season.
Monaco are a team riddled with injury, and have a difficult game against Lyon on Sunday, followed by a game three days later. They simply do not have the team fitness to field strong lineups in all these fixtures. I expect some rotation in this game as to not risk any key players for important league matches.
Conversely, Dortmund are flying in the league as they top the Bundesliga with 36 points while going undefeated this season. They have won 13 games while drawing 3, but they need a win in this game to have any chance of topping Group A.
I struggle to see anything other than a Dortmund win as Monaco have much more important games to focus on in the league.
Club Brugge are in the Europa League no matter the result in this one, but Madrid will push for a win in this game to ensure they top Group A. But, Atletico are struggling on the road this season with four draws in their last four away matches in the league, including three 1-1 draws in a row.
Brugge have done pretty well considering, but they have won just one of their last five matches while losing three and drawing one in their domestic league. They should turn their attention more to the league to push for the title as they have nothing to gain from this match but pride.
But, they only have one more game before the new year, and that comes on the 23rd of December so they could play a full strength team in this one.
Also, I am sceptical with Madrid considering their poor away form both in La Liga and the Champions League. Brugge were able to score at the Wanda Metropolitano, and I have a feeling they will score again tonight.
Atletico Madrid have conceded in four of their last five away matches in all competitions while Club Brugge have failed to score in just one home match this season. In fact, Brugge are averaging 2.36 goals per home match.
