Wright Win7-5 |
So here we are, Day 16 and it’s time for the PDC World Darts Championship Final. The two best players in the tournament have made it to this point as we look ahead to Michael Smith vs Peter Wright for the right to become the winner of the famous Sid Waddell trophy! Here are my tips and analysis for this huge match!
The final of the PDC World Darts Championship is always a thrilling encounter. The players themselves will all look at this match as the biggest in their careers, just making it to a World Championship final is the pinnacle of any player’s career and gives them a chance to complete their darting destiny.
Michael Smith has had an extraordinary tournament that could well become career-defining. He’s shown incredible maturity throughout this tournament, something that has perhaps been missing in the past. He came through a really good battle in the Semi-Final, defeating the always dangerous James Wade 6-3. Bully Boy averaged 100.98 and had a 45.1% checkout rate. He played really well under pressure with some brilliant clutch finishing and came out the deserved winner to make it through to his second World Championship Final.
Smith in this tournament has certainly been one of the stands out players and without a doubt, deserves to be in this final. After defeating Jonny Clayton, Gerwyn Price and James Wade in his last 3 games, he will definitely feel ready for this match. His tournament stats are also very impressive. Over the five matches he has played he has a running average of 100.65, a double percentage of 47.57% and has hit an incredible 59 180s.
Michael will know what a huge task he faces tonight but he has opened the door once again for another opportunity to win a major tournament for the first time and what better time to do it, in a World Championship Final.
Peter Wright has had yet another wonderful campaign at a PDC World Championship and has made it through to his third World Championship Final. He came through one of the best games you will ever see in not only the World Championship but in any TV major. He defeated Gary Anderson 6-4 with a 104.38 average and had a 42.31% checkout rate. In a match that set a record for the most 180s ever in a PDC World Championship semi-final, 39! Peter Wright himself set a record for the most 180s ever in a PDC World Championship match, with an incredible 24! Peter Wright also missed double 12 for a 9 darter in the match!
Snakebite has really played himself into form in this tournament and is now arguably favourite to win his 2nd World Championship crown. He defeated Ryan Searle, Callan Rydz and Gary Anderson in his previous 3 matches with none of those games being easy. His tournament stats are also very impressive with his tournament average at 100.66, his doubles percentage at 40.10% and he has had 55 180s in the tournament!
Peter Wright will certainly be coming into this World Championship Final full of confidence after last night’s extraordinary match. He’ll know a win tonight and a 2nd World Title would push him up amongst the absolute darting elite as one of the greatest players in history to ever play the sport.
This match could potentially be one of the greatest World Championship Finals in history. Both are in amazing form and I can’t see anyone running away with it so I expect it to be a really close match with 180s and high finishes galore. Peter Wright was obviously really impressed with last night’s performance but it was a long gruelling match and he’s talked openly about a slight knee problem so he’ll be hoping that fatigue doesn’t become a factor in this match.
Michael Smith has been here before and will know the pressure that’s on him to finally pick up a major trophy. He’s definitely matured but it’s always going to be in the back of his mind that he needs a major to get that monkey off his back.
Ultimately I just think this could be Peter Wright’s night because of the form he showed last night. He’s going to be full of confidence and because he has won major trophies and because Smith still hasn’t, I think that could well be the deciding factor. Wright also has an amazing record against Smith on TV, winning the last 11 TV knockout matches between them.
