After all the festivities, we return with Day 10 of the PDC World Darts Championship as we continue with round 3. Another bumper double session to look forward to today!
There are some huge names in action who are all still in with a chance of lifting the famous Sid Waddell trophy. Michael Smith, James Wade, Jonny Clayton and the reigning World Champion Gerwyn Price are the stand out names today. Here are my tips for Day 10.
I think this has the potential of being a pretty comfortable match for Ross Smith. I’m surprised at the odds in this match as I genuinely believe Smith should probably be favourite. I think he’s certainly looked better at times this season although van Duijvenbode has the higher seasonal average in the Players Championship Pro Tour events. The big question mark here will be if Ross Smith can continue the fine form he’s shown coming into this tournament. He’s progressed for the first time in his career past round 2 in the PDC World Championship so will be looking to push on even further and I think he has a great chance to do so.
Dirk van Duijvenbode had a huge breakthrough year last season but hasn’t quite pushed on as we all expected. He struggled this year on TV, although he did have a good run to the 5th round of the UK Open earlier in the year. However he’s had a very solid season in the Players Championship Pro tour events, the highlight being a title in Players Championship 11 in April, following that up the next day with a runner up finish in Players Championship 12. Ross Smith has also had a good year on the Pro Tour events, a breakthrough year for him. He won Players Championship 19 in July and had a further two runner up finishes over the season.
The big advantage here in my opinion will be that Ross Smith has played and won 2 games on that stage already during this tournament so will be primed and ready for this match. Dirk has only played one and didn’t look overly convincing in his 3-2 win over Boris Koltsov. I wouldn’t rule out van Duijvenbode, but just based on form coming into this tournament and the way Smith played beating Stephen Bunting in the last round, I really see Smith progressing fairly comfortably into round 4.

This match has the potential to be a real banana skin for Michael Smith and it certainly won’t be easy. William O’Connor has been in fabulous form coming into this tournament and has carried it on so far on that stage. He’s won two games and looked very convincing in doing so, averaging 96.02 and 90.04 in wins over Danny Lauby- jr and Glen Durrant.
Bully Boy has also been in fantastic form and has also carried that on into this tournament with a magnificent 106.32 average in his second-round victory over Ron Meulenkamp. Both players have also had 2 of the highest checkout percentages of the second round, O’Connor with 69% and Smith with 75%, so expect plenty of good finishing!
Overall I can see this being a tricky game for Michael Smith to overcome but I do expect him to progress into the next round. His experience of that stage and having deep runs into this tournament before will be a big factor. This equals O’Connor’s best run in the World Championships so he may well be nervous coming into this as it’s a big moment in his career. It’s going to be tight so I can’t see Smith completely having it his own way and running away with it. There’ll be plenty of 180s and big finishes in this game so expect it to perhaps be an ally pally classic!
Another game today that could be a tough one to call. The way James Wade played in his first match will certainly not fill himself or his fans with confidence. He averaged just 83.74 in his second-round win over Maik Kuivenhoven, one of his lowest ever TV averages. He didn’t look very comfortable at all, but with Wade’s extreme mindest, it probably won’t bother him very much and you may well see a fresh-looking Machine tonight.
Vincent van der Voort had a pretty solid 3-0 victory over the tricky Adam Hunt in his first match which will definitely fill him with confidence. The scoreline looked comfortable but Vincent certainly had to work hard so he would have enjoyed it and been happy with his performance. After a good start to his campaign, I expect him to be a solid challenge for Wade this evening. Vincent has really started to turn his career around again after a few poor seasons suffering from a back injury and is now starting to look much more solid on the big stage.
This match is all about James Wade, if he plays well he wins but that’s the tricky part, you never quite know which Wade will turn up. I do though expect to see a much more concentrated Wade this evening as his draw is starting to open up. He has a massive chance of winning his quarter and having a deep run in this tournament if he gets his head down. I do expect Vincent to score heavily this evening and put Wade under pressure, but ultimately The Machine will come through this match and progress into the next round.
A player at the moment everyone looks forward to watching, Jonny Clayton takes to the stage for his third-round tie. Clayton really has looked in immaculate form this year and has started his campaign in the same vein. He came through a fantastic match with the young superstar Keane Barry in his last match, averaging 103.70, the highest average he’s recorded in the PDC World Championship.
I truly believe the way he was pushed by Barry will certainly be a positive for him moving forward in this tournament. He proved to himself he can come through a tight clash under pressure and also proved to himself that he can play to the highest standard on that stage, because playing in a World Championship isn’t easy, a lot of top players struggle to perform here.
Gabriel Clemens will certainly be happy to have got his campaign started with a win after a pretty torrid time on TV this season. He will still be concerned however with the way he played, averaging just 86.29 in his victory over Lewis Williams albeit Williams struggling and not pushing him. He will though take confidence from his victory and his previous performances in the World Championship so will be hoping to reproduce his best form tonight, because he will certainly need to be close to that to trouble The Ferret.
Overall I can’t see anything other than a comfortable victory for Jonny Clayton and I expect him to play just as well if not better than he did in his previous match. Clayton will want to keep sending out the message to his fellow competitors, that he can win this tournament and is certainly a danger.
Ross Smith, Michael Smith, James Wade and Jonny Clayton all to win at 3.64/1 with Betway.
