Barcelona win CdR – Luis Enrique´s last game
After being eliminated at the quarter finals in the Champions League without even scoring a goal in both games against Juventus. And after failing to win against the smaller team such as Alaves and Malaga, Barcelona lost the league title to their arch enemy Real Madrid. Something that means Barcelona will have a busy summer.
After already announcing that he will not continue as the teams’ coach next season, this was also Luis Enrique´s last game. The players said that they will be playing the last game for Enrique to make sure he will not leave Barcelona with a title drought. With Luis Suarez suspended it Paco Alcacer was handed the chance to win a title. Messi and Neymar on the flanks like usual. With Sergi Roberto injured Mascherano started at the right back, Umtiti and Pique played as center backs and Jordi Alba to the left. In the middle of the field Busquets, Rakitic and Iniesta started together.
The game started with Barcelona controlling the game and they took the lead just like expected beforehand. And like many times before it was Lionel Messi who showed the way and gave the Catalans the lead. But the lead did not hold for long. As Theo Hernandez, who have now signed for Real Madrid, scored the equalizer just three minutes later. But Barcelona did have a quick response. Neymar scored the leading goal in the 45th minute. And just before the halftime whistle Paco Alcacer made sure to make everything out of the chance he was given and scored the final goal of the game.
Barcelona won the game 3-1 in total and did lift their only title for this season, the Copa Del Rey. And Luis Enrique did get the farewell he deserved. Barcelona have not been as good as they have used to. The front three have delivered like always, scoring more than 100 goals together this season. But they failed to do that against Juventus. But the problem have been in the back four and midfield. After Xavi Hernandez moved to Qatar they never managed to actually replace him. The same problem happened with Dani Alves and at the same time Jordi Albas form really dropped. Their replacement Rafinha, Denis Suarez, Digne and Andre Gomes never matched the expectations.
Luis Enrique will even though leave with his head held up high. Winning nine out of twelve possible titles he has become the third most successful coach in the history of the club just after the king Pep Guardiola and the legendary Johan Cruyff. The fans did give him a good farewell also, by showing a banner during the last game at Camp Nou saying you are always one of us Lucho!
Barcelona continue to win titles and have done that now for the last three years. Ernesto Valverde has been announced as the new coach. The former Barcelona player comes from Athletic Bilbao. But he have previously coached Villareal and Espanyol. So he have experience from La Liga and an old Barcelona player who played under the management of Johan Cruyff. Exactly the type of coach the board was looking for.
