South Africa’s Steyn out of Australia Series Cricket
South Africa vs. Australia Test Series
Cricket is one of the most popular sports events in both South Africa and Australia. These two countries share a well-documented rivalry with numerous classic series between them; the latest clash between the two being the Perth Test in Australia. News from the South Africa camp has every supporter on the edge as it was reported that fast bowler Dale Steyn is out of the series with an injury. Steyn sustained a shoulder fracture on day two of the first test in Perth.
News of Steyn’s injury marred what appeared to be a superb day for the Proteas. South Africa had fought back from 158-0 to register 242 runs in the first innings. Steyn himself had picked up one wicket of David Warner who had 97 runs to his name. By the end of day two, South Africa was leading by 102 runs with eight wickets remaining.
Update on Steyn’s Injury
After assessment, Doctor Mohammed Moosajee reported that Steyn had fractured his right shoulder. The doctor also report that the bowler will likely require surgery, but after a second opinion from a specialist the surgery was canceled. This latest injury is said to sideline the fast bowler for at least six months. After a string of injuries to one of their most reliable players, the Proteas management has no choice but to begin a search for a long time replacement of the legend.
Implications of the Steyn Injury
Dale Steyn is one of South Africa’s all-time best cricketers. With 417 test wickets to his name, the 33 year old is the second all-time in wickets just four wickets shy off Shaun Pollock’s record.
A decision to call up a replacement was reached after a team meeting. It was decided that Dwaine Pretorius – a 27 year old Lions all-rounder – will be called upon to replace Steyn for the remainder of the test. Pretorius made his debut in September in one day international series against Ireland. His call up was a reward for his solid performance for the Lions in the Sunfoil series.
