Refree in focus when Real go through to the semifinals
A game called as the early final. Two giants go head to head over two legs were the master have to stand against the student. Bayern München’s coach Carlo Ancelotti would return once again to Santiago Bernabue. But it is not only his old team he will be up against but also his old assistant Zinedine Zidane. The Frenchman was with Ancelotti when Real Madrid claimed their 11th (also called the un decima) European title. Bayern München players had also their own revenge to take after Real Madrid eliminated them in the semis three years ago with a total of 7-0.
The first game was played at the Allianz Arena and Bayern had major setbacks before the game started. Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels were both out of the game and their replacement did not do their job like they were supposed to. The game started very well with Bayern having somewhat more chances and created chances to score many goals but the Real Madrid defense was always there in the last second. But then came a corner, perfectly crossed by Thiago Alcantara to meet Vidals forehead. The Chilean player headed the ball with the speed of 73km/h. Bayern continued to press and they were given an incorrect penalty. Vidal was supposed to make it 2-0 before half-time but his shoot was too wide over the bar and missed.
In the second half Real made a heroic comeback and like most of the times Ronaldo was of course the decisive player. He scored two goals and Real were able to hold on with the lead to have an advantage with them in the second leg at Santiago Bernabue. Between the two goals Bayern München’s Javi Martinez managed to get his second yellow card and was sent off.
The second leg was very different. Hummels and Lewandowski were back in the starting line-up which meant Muller and Martinez were not there no more. Bayern started pressing high and tried to score but there were not enough chances. Then Casimero brought down Robben in the penalty area. Lewandowski converted the penalty and made it 1-0. Real came back again and like the last meeting it was Ronaldo who scored the equalizer. But minutes after Ramos made a terrible mistake and scored an own goal. Then the controversy started.
2-1 leading Vidal was living on the edge having already a yellow card early from the first half. And after what the replay showed a perfect tackle the referee decided to give him his second yellow. Bayern had to play the last ten with one man less. The referee blew the whistle and extra-time was waiting. In the extra-time Kroos found Ronaldo in the penalty box and he equalized it to 2-2. But the replay showed him clearly offside a very poor decision from the linesman. Ronaldo went on and scored the third goal to complete his hattrick. And this goal was also offside something the second linesman missed. Asensio scored the fourth and Real Madrid are through to the semis.
It is terrible that such a great game with two so big clubs is decided by three very poor referees. The red card and offside goals destroyed the game and Bayern were unfairly punished.
